VERBAL SELF DEFENCE OUTLINE

These one day workshops are primarily aimed at training commercial and public sector organisations staff in the strategies needed to successfully manage a verbally aggressive and potentially physically aggressive client. This training is ideal for any service oriented staff who come into regular contact with members of the public. However the strategies taught apply to all verbally aggressive encounters outside the service environment so individuals who are not part of these environments will still benefit from this workshop.

When not handled correctly these situations can escalate and become physical. Managing verbal confrontations can be very challenging often leading to elevated stress levels for staff members. The aim of the training is to defuse such interactions before they become overly aggressive and assist in reducing the stress levels of staff by providing them the tools to deal with these difficult situations.

The outline for the one day workshop is given below. The emphasis is on understanding the nature of aggression and what are our standard ways of reacting. We then move on to look at a defusing process that facilitates the de-escalation of a hostile conversation to the point at which effective problem solving can be achieved.
