HOCK HOCHHEIM'S SCIENTIFIC FIGHTING CONGRESS (SFC)
What is Hock's Scientific Fighting Congress?
W. Hock Hochheim is an expert on knives and close quarter
combatives. He is a 23 year Texas Police and Military Police
veteran and in that time has had many altercations with attackers
armed with guns, knives, bottles, axes etc. and has participated
in a number of gunfights as a police officer.
He has been used as a knife expert in many investigations
and has taught over 50 Police and Military units Weapon &
CQC tactics. He is a World Martial Arts Hall Of Famer and
has numerous Black Belts in Filipino, Japanese, Korean, Chinese
& American Systems. He has been personally taught &
graded by some of the world's foremost experts such as Remy
Presas, Grand Master Ernesto Presas, Wally Jay. He has authored
6 books including the Knife Fighting Encyclopaedia, Military
Knife Combat and has produced over 40 combat instructional
videos for both law enforcement and civilian use.
With this experience Hock created the Scientific Fighting
Congress (SFC) which specializes in:
1. Hand-to-Hand Combatives
2. Stick/Baton Combatives
3. Knife/Counter Knife Combatives
4. DMS: Hock's CQC Stick/Baton Striking and Grappling
5. Archipelago Combatives - the Essence of Pacific Islands
Combatives
6. Pistol/Rifle/Shotgun and Threat Combatives.
The SFC is a hybrid of Military, Police and Martial Art tactics.
SFC believes that a percentage of all martial arts contain
good techniques. But on the same token they also contain a
lot of traditional and fancy techniques that have no place
in real world combat. The SFC uses techniques and manoeuvres
from all different styles across the world along with Police
and Military tactics.
The SFC has a ranking system in 4 specialist areas:
1. The unarmed combat division is known as Hand-to-Hand Combat.
There are 10 levels before the equivalent of Black Belt.
2. The Knife Combatives has 10 major levels.
3. SDMS (two hands on single stick) which has only 3 levels.
4. Archipelago Combatives, which combines Pacific Island combatives
with sticks, knives and hand to hand, combat.
SDT's Connection to the Scientific Fighting Congress
Graham is a certified Senior Instructor in two of Hock's
SFC streams: SDMS (Single and Dos Manos System) and Archipelago
combatives. SDMS is essentially a subsystem of the Filipino
two handed weapon systems (Dos Manos means 'two hands' in
Spanish). Hock has it as a separate system as it suits teaching
the police and military security officers who have to use
their batons, riot sticks and extendable batons in their police
work and for teaching the military non-firing techniques with
rifles and assault guns (including bayonet work).
The Archipelago system is based on the Modern Arnis system
of stick and knife fighting (under Master Remy Presas) with
a variety of locking and throwing techniques from other system
incorporated.
Why Do We Train in SFC?
SFC has a very strong weapons orientation and blends well
with the Doce Pares system, which both blend well with the
basic stick and knife fighting that exists within Krav Maga.
Dos Manos
The SDMS techniques are particularly suited to SDT's aim of
provided well rounded training in street weapons work. The
Dos Manos techniques lend themselves to being applied to any
common object that requires the use of two hands. Apart from
the pole, shovel, baseball bat, steering wheel lock type of
implement, the movements extend to 'shield' objects such as
bags, chairs and folders. This then connects with the Krav
Maga syllabus where in the very first level (Practitioner
1) students are taught to use common objects as 'shields'.
That is as implements to use in blocking, deflecting or otherwise
naturalizing attacks, especially involving another weapon.
Knife Work
SFC is a very knife orientated system and has a strong knife
syllabus. That however is not generally taught (only very
experienced students are taught as a measure of social responsibility
on our part). What is taught are exercises and drills that
develop hand/eye co-ordination and those movements that have
application to use of small common objects (pen, toothbrush,
spoon etc.) in line with Krav Maga's concept of using anything
lying around as an implement.
SFC Concepts
Finally, SFC has a number of concepts such as the early,
mid and late phase defence concept, common counters and problem
solving on the fly that we find useful in training.
